Challenge.
ADT needed to address the most pressing issue facing the security industry today: false alarms. The
average alarm system user sets off several false dispatches each year. When police, fire and emergency
personnel respond to those alarms, they may be kept from real emergencies. In some cities, police
were threatening to not respond to private alarms in areas where false alarms were high.
Action.
From available research, it was clear that the key to eliminating false alarms was customer education.
So, Murray started mailing educational material directly to all 6.5 million customers nationwide – by
far the largest undertaking of its kind in the history of the security industry. The FADE brochure
directs customers to the online component where they are able to show their support and update their
information, further helping to eliminate false alarms. Updated contact information allowed ADT
Monitoring most effective operation. But, customers were not going to change false alarms on their
own. Murray business consultants suggested methods of integrating FADE as part of ADT’s regular business process. All
ADT team members were given the tools needed to continue customer education.

Results.
ADT was pleased to report an immediate decline in false dispatches – up to 25% in some cities – which
could, in turn, translate into real tax dollars in some municipalities. Police departments issued ADT
commendations for their active stance on false alarms and continue to work together on alarm dispatches.
